Musical March Madness

It’s only February, but one of the biggest sporting events of the year not named the Super Bowl is coming around the corner.  The NCAA basketball tournament is sooner than you think and instead of doing the whole filling out the bracket thing that you can do anywhere, we’re gonna be a little more relevant to our fanbase here.  Just like any tourney, not everyone can make it, so if your favorite team…I mean favorite band or artist…doesn’t make it, then you better hope they are doing well in recruiting so that they make it next year.  If that doesn’t work, blame the east coast bias and blame the selection committee, we don’t have feelings.

There will be one or two polls every day until we have a winner.  The ultimate winner will be champion for 2011.  They win the right to tweet about being champion…you win the right to vote your favorite band or artist into that opportunity.

So, looking at the brackets, who is going to win and why?  Who got robbed from being selected?

That is sad that LS and P86 are going against each other in the first round. Both of these bands are ones that should go all the way. Also, awesome to see Blindside on here. So stoked for their comeback, if they lose in the first round that is just plain ridiculous.

    it’s a cruel game, i know

    My opinions:

I feel like Lecrae got robbed by being a 12 seed, and the opposite for Emery.
I don’t have a clue hoe Owl City got a 17 and I’m lost on where Everyday Sunday is.
    And where is Paramore at?
    I love the bracket otherwise.

  4. Tyler Hess March 15, 2011 at 2:31 pm

If Lecrae got robbed, he would have proved it by beating the 5 seed.
Emery bribed their way to the top spot.
Owl City did get hosed, that is probably because the selection committee doesn’t like him much
Everyday Sunday…hasn’t done much noteworthy of late, maybe next year for them
Paramore…I don’t really know what to do with Paramore at this point…that band is in shambles with the Farro brothers leaving…I don’t want to bash the people in the band and I don’t know them personally, but at this point I don’t feel comfortable covering them as a band, as much as I like their music.

    Where’s P.O.D.?????

  6. Tyler Hess March 17, 2011 at 12:41 am

    living it up in 2001?

  7. Dave March 17, 2011 at 4:19 am

2001 was the height of their popularity, but they’ve been putting out really good albums since then and are working on another one right now. Check out thewhosoevers.com to see how Sonny, the singer, and some others are ministering to the youth!

How on earth did Relient K and Emery Get number one seeds and Skillet, who has sold more records than either of them, is only fifth? Who decides this anyway?

  9. Tyler Hess March 21, 2011 at 3:05 pm

I decide this. Not everything is about record sales. Francesca sold more albums than either of them, too, but she lost a play-in game because she doesn’t have as much cache on this website. Skillet should have had a higher seed, probably, but you can’t always give the #1 seeds to Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky. Sometimes you have to give them to Pitt, just to see what happens.

Also…I’m totally biased and like those bands a lot. the good thing is that if a band has a good following here, they’ll prove it by winning their games. if they don’t, then better luck next year. Skillet had a tough matchup against TFK, lost be 3, I’m sure they’ll somehow survive and have a strong showing next year. hopefully we won’t have to wait another year and a half for a new album, but i bet we will.

woops left out needtobreathe and downhere completely man…

  11. Tyler Hess March 23, 2011 at 8:50 pm

I could see NTB being in here, they have a pretty good following, I just forget about them cus I don’t like countryish stuff, but i don’t think downhere would garner the votes needed to beat anyone. maybe next year there will be a poll to let some wild cards into the event after the ones the selection committee comes up with.

  12. Kurt Eisele March 27, 2011 at 12:25 pm

hahha. this is a JOKEE Skillet out by TFK?? yea right lol. Emerys good but not a 1 seed. Just a plain joke

  13. Nolan Daniels March 27, 2011 at 1:48 pm

Are you serious? Skillet? Not only are they out, but out by TFK? Who’s voting?!?

  14. Tyler Hess March 27, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Crazy things happen in these tourneys. Thats just the way it is.

  15. Michael March 27, 2011 at 10:15 pm

Skillet Lost because TFK had a twitter thing sent out telling fans to vote and skillet did not.

  16. Tyler Hess March 27, 2011 at 10:37 pm

    twitter is a powerful thing

  17. Caleb March 28, 2011 at 6:12 pm

All of a sudden Red gets 307 votes out of nowhere? I mean sure, they are good but thatt’s like three times more than anyone else got. Is someone cheating?

  18. Tyler Hess March 28, 2011 at 6:16 pm

its called a re-tweet…when a band tweets about it their fans flock to the rescue.

  19. Caleb March 28, 2011 at 7:14 pm

For everyone else disappointed about Skillet’s early elimination, vote for them vs. Linkin Park at http://www.fuse.tv/music/polls/battle-of-the-fans-rockers/poll-3.html

  20. Kurt March 30, 2011 at 5:01 am

Come on Switchfoot!!! Bring it home baby!!!!

  21. Lucas March 30, 2011 at 8:23 am

I’m pretty sure they will to. I’d be okay with that. :) I say Relient K, Anberlin, Switchfoot, and The Classic Crime (probably wishful thinking) in the top 4. Although I love House of Heroes too and I guess I’d be fine with Underoath.

  22. Tyler Hess March 30, 2011 at 8:41 am

I still have four of my favorite bands in the mix and I don’t even vote…the elite eight is shaping up rather nicely. The selection committee underestimated Red and Tenth Avenue North just a little bit

  23. Lucas March 30, 2011 at 9:14 am

Which is surprising seeing that RED’s new record reached #2 on the Billboard 200…

  24. Tyler Hess March 30, 2011 at 10:23 am

i am pretty sure i came up w/ the rankings before Red’s album came out…and i never followed their sales enough to know how big their fanbase was…they’ll surely have a better seed next year

  25. Seth March 30, 2011 at 11:38 am

The only band I would have like to see here would bee A Rotterdam November, but they don’t have a huge fan base. This bracket is a great alternative to regular March Madness *rolls his eyes* Thanks for the work on this bracket and site. Really great set up.

  26. Caleb April 1, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Yeah, lets see Rotterdam November on here next year. The small bands always treat their fans best. I ordered a t-shirt from their website, and the order was delayed, so they sent me two free albums.

  27. Tyler Hess April 1, 2011 at 4:27 pm

if they want in on this next year, they probably gotta get signed and come out with a great album this year

  28. Jimmy Dooley April 2, 2011 at 3:21 pm

this is such a cool idea! Never heard of many of these poeple but love the concept, awesome

  29. jthejust April 2, 2011 at 3:25 pm

For the quarter finals: Relient K is better than HOH, TCC is (much) better than RED, Anberlin is better than Underoath (especially since Underoath’s crappy last album), and Switchfoot is better than Tenth.

  30. Seth April 3, 2011 at 3:37 pm

    I agree with jthejust.

  31. gabriel April 4, 2011 at 6:49 pm

What about Sanctus real, Day of fire and The afters??? they are pretty good I would have loved to see them here… anyway I think switchfoot is going to win against hoh

  32. Ian April 4, 2011 at 6:53 pm

It’s not what I would have picked but I predict a final RED VS. Switchfoot showdown. They have had the biggest voting fanbases so far. I want SF to win but odds are that RED will.

  33. Tyler Hess April 4, 2011 at 7:45 pm

i could see the afters making it above the other two suggestions, we’ll have to wait til next year to see who makes it.

just remember, only 68 could make it out of hundreds

  34. Lucas April 4, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Well sadly House of Heroes has nothing on RED’s fanbase even though they are an insanely talented band. Then we have Anberlin and Underoath which could be close, but I think Anberlin will pull it out easy and move on to Switchfoot who they will probably lose against, however it’s definitely possible for them to win.
But I think it’ll be Switchfoot and RED and if RED wins it’ll be a travesty. Not trying to hate on them because I really like their music a lot, but Switchfoot, Anberlin, and HOH are all FAR better.

  35. Andrew April 6, 2011 at 9:24 am

Underoath is in the elite eight, but August Burns Red loses first round? And how did Skillet beat David Crowder Band? Relient K should have beat House of Heroes too. The upper two brackets are definitely superior though, I just can’t believe that HoH won their bracket…

  36. Aust276 April 6, 2011 at 1:44 pm

yeahhhh RED going all the way! =).. and just so you all know.. RED hasn’t been tweeting or making fb posts about this.. i’ve just seen fans posting on their fb wall about voting.. its all the fans.. REDHEADS ftw!

  37. Tyler Hess April 6, 2011 at 5:16 pm

That isn’t entirely true. Red the band, plus their bassist and vocalist have all re-tweeted @cmzine whenever they have a game going on.

  38. Eko April 7, 2011 at 9:15 pm

what? how did Red beat House of Heroes? How did House of Heroes beat Relient K? Switchfoot better win now.

  39. nathan overlock April 8, 2011 at 9:05 am

This bracket is really messed up, I mean HOH beating relient K? TFK beating SKillet? hawk nelson, falling up, and stellar kart not even making it past the first round of voting? seriously?

  40. Jim April 8, 2011 at 10:06 am

This is awesome! How did I not know about this until now? Glad to see my favorite band in the Championship. Go RED!

  41. Dylan April 8, 2011 at 10:23 am

I love TFK and Switchfoot so much, upset TFK got knocked out. And I love Red and Switchfoot, but voting for the Foot. They’re so far behind though =/

  42. bill April 8, 2011 at 11:33 am

why is there so much hating on red? there in the finals because there good…period

  43. Ben April 8, 2011 at 12:08 pm

Definitely wish I had known about this when it was going on! I see John Reuben and downhere got snubbed, wouldn’t mind them sneaking in as low seeds next year. Good to see HOH in the final four. can’t wait for next year!

  44. Tyler Hess April 8, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Next year will be even better…and there will be more opportunity for other bands and artists to get their shot to get into the tournament…I’m thinking we’ll have some sort of “regular season” or possibly “conference tournaments” to see who makes it into next year’s march madness.

  45. E!g@o$n April 8, 2011 at 3:50 pm

wow must say for me there was a few suprises there like david crowder falling out early (personally i think dvid crwdr is one of the few christian artists who has variations in his music and also has movement whereas alot of christian music is extremely predictable ,but thats just my opinion!) and where is Brian Head Welsch?

  46. E!g@o$n April 8, 2011 at 3:51 pm

oh ja,GO RED!!!! they are the only band that deserve to win!\

  47. Jeff April 9, 2011 at 12:16 pm

WHAT…NO PILLAR OR MANAFEST IN THE TOURNAMENT???

  48. Jon April 11, 2011 at 8:11 pm

OMG!!! RED WON!!! THAT IS AWESOME!!! And for those of you complaining…Well the other bands should have worked harder :P …not saying they’re not good though.

  49. Kurt April 20, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Wow…. hate to say it, but Red is just another “Underoath type band” I think Switchfoot is way more talented and better song writers. Im kinda disappointed in the bracket, but I guess it’s just how many fans a band has that checks this website and nothing else. But at least SF won a grammy!!!

  50. Tyler Hess April 20, 2011 at 5:54 pm

in what way is red like uo? i dont see the comparison
