Peter Furler Goes Solo

I don’t know if this counts as a strange, late turn of events, a returned yearning, or something we all should have seen coming, but longtime Newsboys frontman, before “retiring” from the band a couple years ago, Peter Furler has signed a record deal.  According to the man himself the deal is with EMI CMG, who confirmed it.  This may be via Sparrow, who mentioned that the new album would be called “Reach”, if I’m understanding that correctly.

Fantastic! Peter has written almost everything the Newsboys did up till he left the band. His music is amazing! I cannot wait to hear some solo stuff!

I wish the Newsboys and Mr. Furler put the same kind of effort into telling the truth and dealing properly with their fans as they apparently do with their music. When frontman John James left the group the Newsboys lied about why he left. Instead of telling the truth they said he was leaving to do ministry. In reality Mr. James was having some very serious issues and struggling with sin. I read an in-depth interview with Mr. James on this. When Mr. Furler left the group it was done in a very poor manner and very disrespectfully to fans. Peter left and Michael Tait replaced him DURING A TOUR. Peter left and completely changed the beloved band without warning, leaving fans hurt, confused, and upset. People had already bought tickets for the tour shows and were never told in some cases that Peter Furler (whom everyone knew as the lead singer of the Newsboys) would not be there and had been replaced by Michael Tait! People paid money to see a concert, to see the Newsboys they know and love and showed up to not get what they paid for and to be shocked. A vague reason was given for Mr. Furler’s leaving that was not fair to the fans and not at all what they deserved. They cited him wanting to sleep in his own bed and so forth. For such a basic reason, could he not have had the integrity to finish the tour and give people what they paid for? With a vague explanation, fans were very upset feeling like the Newsboys had let them down while they were the very ones who had put them where they were by supporting them. This was not just a slap in the face to their fans but a lack of Christian morality and integrity, not to mention a very unprofessional business decision. Since they lied about John James it was easy to suspect they were not telling everything about Furler leaving or lying. On top of all that, Mr. Furler now decides to go solo. Which begs the question is that why he left the group to begin with? And why in the world, if that’s the case, did they not just tell people that? So I’m not shocked to see it reported that, though saying he would work behind the scenes with the band writing and producing, he neither wrote anything or produced Newsboys new album. When you have lied like that, it is difficult to be believed.

“christiangirl”, I want to reply to you, though I doubt that you will return to the website after having just left quite a long vent.

When they were a young men, they covered for a friend who was caught in sin, which they shouldn’t have done, but you are holding a rather long grudge on that.

Peter had been with the band for 2 decades…and Newsboys are ALWAYS on tour. He needed some time off. Band members change all the time and they announced it publicly when it happened.

After a couple years off from the band, he has probably recuperated and wanted to do some solo stuff, because he is a musician and they tend to want to make music. I’m guessing that his solo touring may not be as extensive as it was before, much like former Newsboys bassist Phil Joel when he left to do solo work.

You left quite a long comment (on an old post that he will most likely never read) that seems to be in anger, rather than in a spirit of love, reconciliation and forgiveness. You can’t change what happened, but you can make internal decisions on how you react, according to the Spirit or according to the flesh.

My advice is that if you really want answers, you should probably try to contact him directly (he does seem to check his twitter account at the very least), but not with wrath, but in an attempt to reconcile.

Christians should hold each other accountable, but with love, in a way that is an example to those who are outside the church, that they would know us by out love.

    Thank you for reading
