Review: All Sons & Daughters – Brokeness Aside EP1 | Christian Music Zine

Released: July 12, 2011
I have a friend who goes to Journey Church (the home of this band) in Nashville who was constantly putting stuff on twitter about All Sons & Daughters (formerly Sons & Daughters), so I had to check them out. I was expecting another typical church worship band, but found something entirely different. It’s great indie rock that’s worshipful as well.
They did a few of the songs on last year’s Know Hope Collective album with the Audio Adrenaline guys. David Leonard of All Sons and Daughters previously toured with Need to Breathe as well.
The first song I heard off this EP was All the Poor and Powerless. It’s still my favorite, and one of those songs that sticks in your head. I love the lyrics “will your grace run out if I let you down, ‘cuz all I know is how to run. I am a sinner, if it’s not one thing, it’s another” in the title cut Brokeness Aside. The honesty is refreshing. The question is answered when Leslie sings “You are a Savior and you take brokeness aside and make it beautiful”.
If you want to try before you by, you can check them out on NoiseTrade.
It seems like so much Christian music is about 2 years (or more) behind what’s happening in the mainstream music world.
Not this album. It’s relevant. It’s something you can share with a fan of progressive indie music and they won’t wonder why you’re telling them about a 2008 sounding album. Good for fans of The Civil Wars.
This EP gets a 4.5 from me. More music like this is needed! It’s probably the most innovative release to hit the Christian market since John Mark McMillan. If you can’t wait for more tunes like these from All Sons & Daughters, you’re in luck! EP2 is right around the corner.
