Review: Icon For Hire – Scripted | Christian Music Zine

Tooth & Nail Records

Released August 23rd 2011

Reviewed By Tyler Hess

When a band has the potential to be known just as much for their image as for their music, you just never know what you’re going to get until you hear it for yourself.  Icon For Hire is just now releasing their freshman album, yet it is easy to spot them in a crowd, with frontwoman Ariel and her bright pink hair distinguishing the band from most arena rock bands.

Then there are the obvious vocal comparisons that draw obvious comparisons to a mixture of Paramore‘s Hayley Williams and The Letter Black’s Sarah Anthony, with hints of Flyleaf’s Lacey Sturm.  Despite all that, the powerful voice from the Swede overcomes all the obstacles to make their sound their own.

Although when you hear the vocals and hear rock music, you tend to think of certain female led rock bands like those mentioned above or Fireflight, Eowyn, etc., the music itself might remind you of something more along the lines of Since October, so don’t fool yourself into putting them into one particular box, as their music isn’t as easily definable as it seems on the surface.

Scripted starts out with a short intro, “Overture”, followed by an anthemic blast called “Theater”.  When I first heard the band’s debut single, “Make A Move”, it gave me an anticipation that was only slowed by the thought that almost everyone has one good song in them, but few have great rock songs like this in them.

After a synthesized rock song titled “Get Well”, the band introduces their first piano ballad called “The Grey”, staying true to arena rock’s protocol of mixing it up a little with a slower number.  If you’re not careful, you might get whiplash as they explode out of that with “Off With Her Head”, which is approximately the point in time where it’s quite easy to lose yourself in the music and just bop your head up and down to the rhythm of the drums.

Another synth rock piece titled “Fight” is trailed by another fast paced shoot in “Up In Flames” as a build up to the impressive “Iodine”.  The tranquil, atmospheric “Only A Memory” heads us toward a close, where we’re finished off with the encouraging “Pieces”.

If you know what you’re doing, building hype isn’t that difficult.  The tricky part is delivering.  Icon For Hire’s debut album shows off the promise heard on “Make A Move” and puts on a show, with an album full of tracks that can both rock your face off and edify you hearts.

Creation Festival (Northeast) Coverage

For over the past three decades, Creation Festival NE has hosted the top performers in CCM. This year was no different, boasting headliners like tobyMac, Chris Tomlin, Newsboys, and Skillet. Also included in the line-up were some other top-notch bands who don’t fit the CCM mold, like Emery, Disciple, The Almost, and Brian “Head” Welch. Located on a several hundred-acre farm in Central Pennsylvania, Creation is a four-day affair (Wednesday through Sunday) with performances taking place on two stages: Main Stage and Fringe Stage.

Review: All Sons & Daughters – Brokeness Aside EP1 | Christian Music Zine

Label: Integrity
Released: July 12, 2011

I have a friend who goes to Journey Church (the home of this band) in Nashville who was constantly putting stuff on twitter about All Sons & Daughters (formerly Sons & Daughters), so I had to check them out.  I was expecting another typical church worship band, but found something entirely different.  It’s great indie rock that’s worshipful as well.   Read more of this post
