I could never make it in sports journalism.  Not because I couldn’t have dedicated myself to the craft or learn the proper X’s and O’s.  The real reason is that sports journalists aren’t allowed to root from the press box.  They’re told to sit down, shut up and writer your stupid column.  They better not be seen clapping or their press credentials are revoked.  The great thing about music is that we’re all allowed to root for our favorite bands.  An even better thing is that I can still root for my favorite band without having to knock another band in order for my favorites to get somewhere.  So it all comes down to the songs.  It doesn’t matter what genre a band finds them classified under for whatever reason, what matters is do they write good songs within what they do?  That’s why I can allow myself to listen to Tenth Avenue North, an up and coming Florida based Contemporary Christian quartet, because they write great songs within what they do.

You might be as surprised as I was when first listening to their second label release, The Light Meets The Dark, hearing hints of (believe it or not) Coldplay and (slightly more believable) We Shot The Moon or even (way more believable) Nevertheless or (not at all surprisingly) Sixteen Cities throughout the album.  Then you can dig deeper and listen to the actual songs that are filled with lyrics that blatantly proclaim grace and truth in a most meaningful way, with a majorly overlying theme of comparing our own inabilities versus God’s completely capable strengths without saying the same thing over and over again and you’re left with what could be the best album in the CCM genre for the entire year.
